Naga Morich originates from Bangladesh and is one of the hottest peppers in the world. The name means “snake or serpent Chilli” and is an apt name for this ferociously hot variety. It is believed to be closely related to its Indian cousin – the Bhut jolokia and Bih Jolokia. The thin walled wrinkled pods have a high degree of variability in shape, although they are generally wedge shaped.

They average about 5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide. They ripen from a rich green through to yellow/orange and finally to a rich red approximately 120 days after transplanting. The plants are large and bushy, growing to one meter tall. Leaves are ovate in shape and pale green in colour. It is used sparingly (and with great care!) in Bengali cookery.Even though, it is not the hottest pepper in the world, it is still extremely hot and favored over many other superhot for making hot sauce due to its natural acidic/vinegar like flavor. Relatively small plant can be productive in the extended growing season areas. An unofficial test at Warwick University in England had a dried Naga Morich pepper pod come in at over 1,500,000 Scoville units!!!
